One Major Change A Quiet Place Made After Its First Public Screening

Earlier this year, John Krasinski surprised audiences with A Quiet Place, a stunning new horror-thriller that introduced shocking rules for survival in a believable environment: Don't make any noise, or else creatures from space will attack and devour you. But it was actually Krasinski and his creative team that was most surprised, because modern audiences played along with their concept and kept the theatrical experience relatively quiet as well -- turning A Quiet Place into a rare movie-going treat that was improved when watching it with a silent crowd.

Oscar-winning sound editors Ethan van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl said they thought long and hard about crowd noise and its impact on A Quiet Place, and actually admitted to CinemaBlend that they tweaked the film's design after seeing how it played to audiences at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, where Krasinski's movie world premiered. The duo told us:

Erik Aadahl: What we wound up doing after the very first SXSW screening of the film -- which was the first time audiences saw it -- we actually readjusted reel one of the movie a little bit. Where... so, we started the film actually at a more traditional sound level, and then eased the audience in over a few minutes into the quiet. And that gave everyone's ears a chance to re-tune to kind of more... [of] a different experience that people might not have been used to. So we gave theatrical audiences a little bit of a chance to learn the rules, and start to put their popcorn away [laughs] and stop talking or taking texts. And that was kind of fun to, you know -- we checked it out with audiences, and it was kind of neat to see the whole audience start to learn the rules of this film. And in a way, it made them active participants with the characters in the film, which is really an exciting participatory experience for us to see.Ethan van der Ryn: And if you think about it, like, how often does a large group of people have the chance to all be together, you know, basically focused on the same thing, and being quiet, you know, together in order to really understand what's going on. And in many ways I think it was a very rare experience for a lot of people.

These tweaks, happening after the fact, had to be crucial to A Quiet Place working as well as it did. Which made the SXSW premiere of the movie that much more valuable, because the team was able to see how an audience would do under these unusual circumstances, and then tailor the film to meet the need. Erik Aadahl and Ethan van der Ryn spoke with CinemaBlend in Minnesota, where we visited the Orfield Lab, dubbed "The Quietest Place on Earth." We are less than two months away now from the release of Venom and the official start of Sony's shared cinematic universe of Spider-Man characters. There are still a lot of things we don't know about Venom and Sony's plans for this universe long-term, but one thing that is clear so far is that the studio is going for top tier talent for these movies. To that end, Venom has added another member to its cast, and this time, it has borrowed from Marvel's Netflix-verse. Actor Ron Cephas Jones has joined the cast of the upcoming anti-hero flick.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ron Cephas Jones, who plays Bobby Fish on Luke Cage, will be appearing in Venom. However, it is not yet clear what role he will be playing. In addition to his part on Luke Cage, Ron Cephas Jones is probably best known lately for his role on NBC's hit show This Is Us, for which he has received an Emmy nomination this year for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Early this year, Ron Cephas Jones was attached to another big superhero film on the other side of the comic book aisle when he was set to play the Wizard in DC's Shazam! but he had to pass on the role due to scheduling conflicts with the part then going to Djimon Hounsou. It is unclear if Venom was the source of those scheduling conflicts.

Although we have just found out that he will be in the movie, we don't know when exactly he joined the production, thus making it impossible to say how big of a role Ron Cephas Jones will have in Venom. He hasn't been seen in any of the trailers so far, but Venom could still be holding plenty back. Maybe he's just voicing a symbiote. Either way, whether his part is small or large, it is always a good thing to add talent, and with Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson and now Ron Cephas Jones in the cast, Venom certainly won't be lacking in the acting department.

What is interesting about this is that this will be the second Marvel (not Marvel Studios) property that Ron Cephas Jones is in. As Venom is set in San Francisco and not Harlem, plus the corporate divide, it seems extremely unlikely that the actor will be playing his Luke Cage character. However, it is interesting that he is in the Marvel Netflix-verse, which is kind of part of the MCU, albeit with almost no crossover, and now he will be in the MCU-adjacent Sony Spider-verse, which we don't yet know exactly how, if at all, it will connect to Tom Holland's Spider-Man and the MCU. Fortunately, we don't have long to wait to see how it all shakes out.

Out of the blue, as if it were just waiting for the right moment to come to Earth, The Cloverfield Paradox dropped on Netflix Sunday night following the Super Bowl. While we don't know the film's metrics of success just yet, it has the potential to become an instant blockbuster -- as the film was announced as a Netflix release only hours before its debut on the streaming platform. What can't be debated though is the fact that the film is one of the most divisive experiences in recent years, especially because of its adaptation from a pre-existing script known as God Particle.

There's been back and forth on the internet about just how good The Cloverfield Paradox actually is, and it's no surprise considering the film's retrofitting from an original script entitled God Particle definitely shows. Still, even while we recognized this in our official review, our writer had the following to say about the film in general:

The Cloverfield Paradox uses its duration efficiently, mixing thrills and heart into a cocktail that makes for an effectively surprising film.
