Who Idris Elba Could Play In The Suicide Squad

Who Idris Elba Could Play In The Suicide Squad

Recent reports on The Suicide Squad have revealed that Idris Elba will not be replacing Will Smith's Deadshot, and that the actor will be playing another character within the movie. So if Elba isn't playing Deadshot, which villain will director James Gunn have him play? Here are some villains that would be a good fit for the actor, and one just may be the villain he'll portray in The Suicide Squad.

Bronze TigerA frequent face on the Suicide Squad, Bronze Tiger is a martial arts master and ranked among some of the best fighters in DC Comics. He's not a metahuman, which should speak to just how capable of a fighter he is. Including Bronze Tiger in the squad introduces some muscle, and some badass kung fu skills that would make for great action-packed scenes.

It's worth mentioning that Idris Elba has some professional fighting experience, which could point to Bronze Tiger. Of course, a stunt double can be used for other stuff, but Elba's fighting experience should be enough to get face shots of him dealing justice. Plus, Bronze Tiger is a frequent presence in John Ostrander's comic book run, which James Gunn recently referenced in his Instagram stories (via We Got This Covered). Of all the options, this one feels incredibly likely.

NemesisThough the name may suggest otherwise, Nemesis is one of the few non-criminal members of the Suicide Squad. Thomas Andrew Tresser was a vigilante turned operative who joined the team as a debt after his life was saved by Amanda Waller and Rick Flag. Nemesis is a master of disguise and all in all a capable operative with some deep roots within the team.

Adding Nemesis to the team may not be the sexiest option for The Suicide Squad, but there's some potential there in giving him some chemistry with quite a few members. Nemesis has ties to the returning Waller, but also historically has a romantic relationship with Nightshade. Should she and her bonkers skill set join the team, there's a chance for some love to develop in a way that isn't nearly as toxic as Harley and Joker's relationship.

Black SpiderA character mainstream audiences may not be familiar with, Black Spider was first introduced in the mid-70s as a former heroin addict turn vigilante. Eric Needham takes his fight to the drug trade, and becomes a killer of those who push drugs. His methods have put him at odds with heroes like Batman, who he's clashed with in the past for trying to stop him. With that said, he's more apt to fight villains than he is heroes.

Should Idris Elba play the Black Spider, we're imagining The Suicide Squad will feature an alternative costume of the character without the mask. After all, why pay for such a talented and recognizable star only to cover his face for a bulk of the movie? His hatred of criminals (despite being one) would create an interesting dynamic between him and the other roster, which may justify his place on the team more than anything else.

ManhunterIdris Elba could be the character Manhunter, specifically the Mark Shaw version. Shaw's crime fighting abilities are a result of the Manhunter cult, which has provided him with the training and equipment capable of tracking targets across several terrains. Basically, he's the guy The Suicide Squad will turn to to find a missing person, and he'll find them sooner than later. He's kind of like the Yautja Predator, but if they were human.

Manhunter is as solid a choice as any, and his power baton allows for close quarters fighting that makes for some cool sequences. Plus, the Manhunter cult gives an added dimension to the story that could be examined in a spinoff should the character prove popular with audiences. DC never seems to miss an opportunity for a spinoff, so why not bring in a character with the potential to make one?

SportsmasterSportsmaster has had quite a few interpretations of the character over the years, and has been everything from a criminal who dons sports equipment to a metahuman with "photographic reflexes." Lawrence Crock, Victor Grover, Martin Mantle Jr., there's a lot of characters with a lot of backgrounds and powers that Idris Elba could portray, or he could play some entirely new interpretation made for The Suicide Squad.

If there was one director fans would trust with changing a goofy villain up a bit, it's James Gunn. Plus, he's got the chops to make a villain like Sportsmaster look dangerous, and dare I say, cool? It's certainly a possibility if Gunn is running the show, and Idris Elba's comedic chops are there to make for a funny character. At the same time, he's naturally badass, so he may be the perfect person to play this character.

BaneWe know him, we love him, and there's no denying the world would go crazy if the character appeared in The Suicide Squad. Bane is one of Batman's fiercest adversaries, not to mention an incredibly strong and intelligent villain in the DC Universe. Bane's appearance would be such a big deal it would effectively make Harley Quinn the second most interesting Batman villain in the project. Given the amount of love Margot Robbie's character has, that's an impressive feat.

Now, there's a small army of folks that really want to see Dave Bautista play Bane in The Suicide Squad, but imagine how cool Idris Elba would look wearing the mask? Size would be a bit of an issue, as while Elba is well-built, he's not quite the hulking behemoth Bane has been shown to be. CGI can fix that, though, if he uses the venom, and the film could also get away with a grounded look with Elba's physique.

ChronosHere's another character that could have varied interpretations, as Chronos can be anyone from a villain that's really good at timing to a literal time traveler. Hell, he can be both, which could position him as one of the most powerful villains to be a part of The Suicide Squad. That said, it would be hard to have a villain capable of time travel in custody, so maybe just the time mastery would be a part of the character?

What if Chronos' powers were limited by being in the Suicide Squad, but a future version of himself pops into the adventure and helps him get out of his contract? Something like that is why Idris Elba should play Chronos, if only to shake up the The Suicide Squad and make this film more than just villains working together to defeat other bad guys. Raise the stakes, and perhaps lay the groundwork for another true follow up film.

The Suicide Squad is expected to arrive in 2021, which is still a ways off. CinemaBlend will continue to report on updates on the movie in the meantime, and hopefully, we'll learn which character Idris Elba is playing soon.

Stan Lee's 10 Best Marvel Cameos

Stan Lee's 10 Best Marvel Cameos

Stan Lee's passing has struck many film and comic book lovers worldwide, and Marvel films won't be quite the same without his patented cameos. While there are still a few on the way like Avengers 4, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we've gathered what we considered to be the 10 best Marvel cameos Lee did to date, and ones fans may want to re-watch following his death. Listed in chronological order, here are our favorites.

HulkStan Lee's cameo in 2003's Hulk may be one of the things its makers can claim tops other Hulk adventures. Lee's security guard was seen speaking to another guard (played by Lou Ferrigno) about the need to beef up security in the building. It's the first time on film Lee spoke as a character based on himself. It also has a connection Lee's first cameo in a Marvel project, which also starred Ferrigno, The Trial Of The Incredible Hulk.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver SurferStan Lee's rejected entry to Reed Richards' and Susan Storm's wedding wasn't just a funny moment in the 2007 sequel to Fantastic Four, it was a callback to Marvel comics. The scene was a recreation of 1965's Fantastic Four Annual #3, in which Stan Lee and Jack Kirby are similarly turned away from the couple's big day. The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer scene also includes Lee referring to himself by his real name, and not another character.

Spider-Man 3Stan Lee's contribution in 2007's Spider-Man 3 isn't his funniest but is relevant to the film's plot. Lee spoke to Peter Parker as they read a news ticker detailing Spider-Man's saving of a police officer. Lee reminds Parker that "one man can make a difference" and leaves the hero with some food for thought. The "nuff said" really caps this one off, and will probably get a chuckle from Marvel fans for years to come.

Iron Man2008's Iron Man was a turning point for the Marvel film universe, even if it didn't seem as impactful then as it feels now. Lee, of course, showed up for Robert Downey Jr.'s debut as the hero, and the two shared a moment when Tony Stark mistook him for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. As a brilliant side note, an alleged autographed photo from Hefner to Lee exists on the internet, although we're not sure if it's legit.

The AvengersThe Avengers was a huge event for Marvel, so it's awesome that such a big film featured such a fleeting appearance from the Marvel creator. Stan Lee was seen in a news report after the superhero team saved the day, and dismissed them in stereotypical New York fashion. Lee could've had a bigger role in the 2012 movie, but arguably has a more memorable moment with his quick appearance at the end of one of Marvel's greatest films.

The Amazing Spider-ManLee's cameo in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man is unquestionably one of his best, mainly due to his performance in the scene. Lee obliviously jamming out to music while Lizard and Spider-Man wreak havoc all around him really broke up a serious moment in the film. It's one of Lee's best acting performances, and he makes it look so effortless. To be fair, it's probably because he was never actually in danger of that table hitting him.

Captain America: The Winter SoldierStan Lee once again donned the role of a security guard in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, although he probably didn't keep that job. Lee's reaction when he realized Cap's WWII outfit is missing is priceless, as he delivered a line that sounds like it should've been said by a teenager shirking his work responsibilities. That's what makes it so great though. Well, that and his dropped jaw while staring at the mannequin.

Avengers: Age of UltronLee's cameo in the 2015 Avengers sequel was a bit beefier than his first, as this time he actually interacted with one of the iconic heroes. The Marvel man shrugged off Thor's warning regarding his request for some of his millennia-aged alcohol. The scene ends with Lee being helped out of the bar while muttering his catchphrase "Excelsior." Lee noted he loved that appearance in particular, mainly because of the extended screen time he received.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2For years folks had speculated Stan Lee's character was connected throughout every film, and while that theory has been teased, but never explicitly confirmed, 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had some fun referencing it. As Kevin Feige put it when he spoke to CinemaBlend, this cameo does a great job of embodying the "ethereal creative being" Lee was for Marvel comics and a great acknowledgment that he's "one who sits above."

Ant-Man And The WaspStan Lee's joke about the '60s taking a toll on him is a high point in Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is really saying something given the film's laughs. It wasn't the only great joke he had either, as deleted scenes showed Lee delivering several other gut-busting lines that could've easily made the final cut as well. The line chosen is especially ironic, considering Lee was a strong opponent of drugs during the era.

As mentioned, there are quite a few still on the way, and a few more opportunities for audiences to see Stan Lee on the big screen in new Marvel films before his cameos presumably come to an end. When they do, it'll certainly feel as though an era has come to an end, and will be interesting to see whether or not Marvel will continue to honor the creator in future projects.

Fans of Stan Lee who are shocked their favorite cameo didn't make the list can reflect and share their favorite appearance of the Marvel man on film in the comments below. For more on Stan Lee and some of the other cameos he's done over the course of his career outside of the world of Marvel, read up on the recent crossover cameo he had with DC.

Why Kathryn Bigelow Should Direct Bond 25

By  at September 01, 2019  , , ,  No comments
Why Kathryn Bigelow Should Direct Bond 25

The Bond franchise is building to a climax next year, with Daniel Craig potentially stepping down as the suave superspy following the debut of Bond 25. However, as excited as many fans are about the next installment in the series, it recently hit a setback with the departure of 28 Days Later's Danny Boyle from behind the camera. Now, the movie may be pressing pause to figure out which filmmaker will step in and take the franchise in a fresh direction. Yet, I'd argue the proposed story for Bond 25 seems tailor-made for Kathryn Bigelow to step in and work her magic.

The first thing worth mentioning is that the Bond franchise (along with other blockbuster series) has been pitched to Kathryn Bigelow below, specifically by Sony head honcho Amy Pascal. Addressing these opportunities to take on AAA blockbuster movies, the Zero Dark Thirty director opened up to Variety last year and noted she's currently more interested in films that appeal to her sense of journalism than pure entertainment. The director said:

Those opportunities are out there, and I'm grateful. I'm just more drawn to a journalistic aspect of film. That opens up very specific avenues as opposed to more comforting avenues. It's a responsibility I'm excited to pursue, whereas something that has less content is less compelling to me.

That's what makes Danny Boyle's exit from Bond 25 feel like such a unique opportunity for Kathryn Bigelow. Though the film is still in development, and we don't know too much about it yet, some details that have surfaced in the wake of Boyle's departure have suggested that Bond 25 have suggested a story that leans into current headlines, with recent reports noting that the proposed story will focus on the "modern-day Cold War." With a real-life conflict serving as the backdrop of the newest installment in the 007 mythology, this could very well become the premise to pique Kathryn Bigelow's interest.

With all of this said, I also want to note the fact that a Bond film is right up Kathryn Bigelow's alley from a pure filmmaking point of view. With her work on Point Break back in the 1990s, she showed that she could stylistically do gritty action. Just look at the now famous chase scene from that classic heist film, below!

Moreover, with films like The Hurt Locker and Detroit she showed us what she could do in the realm of sustained tension. If she could combine all of those elements together with the budget and reputation that the Bond franchise is known for having (she has mostly worked on relatively-smaller films throughout her career) then we could have something very different and very enjoyable on our hands.

Then there's the simple fact that we've never had a female director on a James Bond movie. It's no secret that the franchise kind of needs a big shot of adrenaline in the wake of the polarizing Spectre, and a big part of that could involve bringing in a filmmaker with a decidedly distinct point of view. It's not that any of the male directors who have worked on recent Bond films like Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, or Spectre have done bad jobs, but bringing in fresh blood that's notably different from previous filmmakers could work wonders on the path to giving the franchise a new flavor.

Of course, tying all of this back together, the biggest key would be selling Kathryn Bigelow on the opportunity. There's no indication that she has been approached for Bond 25, and her previous statements about franchise filmmaking have made it clear that she would probably need to be convinced to take on the job. Having said all of that, the idea of doing a Bond movie based on the current state of Russia-America relations could be the plot point to bring her into the fold, and her talents as a Hollywood legend could make Bond 25 one to remember.

All in all, that's my take, but what's yours? Let us know what you think of Kathryn Bigelow as the possible filmmaker to take on Bond 25 in the poll, below!
