How Much Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Could Make Opening Weekend
We are three superhero movies and one Star Wars title down this year and the summer movie season is just getting started. Three years ago, Jurassic World revived an extinct franchise and roared into the box office, going on to make $1.67 billion worldwide. Now we get to return to Isla Nublar along with Owen Grady, Claire Dearing and the Dinosaur Protection Group in the sequel film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Proving that we never lose interest in dinosaurs, Fallen Kingdom is tracking to open with $140 to $150 million domestically when debuts in a few weeks.
A $140 to $150 million opening weekend would be good enough for third on the charts this year behind MCU leviathan's Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther. Hitting that mark would also put it past Deadpool and Solo: A Star Wars Story, no small feat. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's predecessor launched in 2015 to a shocking $208.8 million opening weekend, which is still good enough for fourth all-time. While Fallen Kingdom is not expected to match that mark, this is still early tracking and there are positive signs that this film will perform well at the box office.
As reported by Variety, total awareness for Fallen Kingdom is at 94% with definite interest at 61%. The amount of people who are aware of and wanting to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom should only increase as we get closer to its release. Universal is going all out with a massive and expensive marketing campaign for the movie, as well as some fun promotional stunts to get the word out there and get audiences excited about some dino fun. As we've seen with Solo and Black Panther, early box office tracking is far from an exact science and could break either way come the film's release. But this gives us a good idea of what the interest level is for the film right now plus a good gauge regarding how Fallen Kingdom might perform.
Hopefully, this movie will have positive word of mouth, too, which should drive those opening weekend numbers. Unlike some of the year's other big releases, Fallen Kingdom will not be launched worldwide on the same date. The film will have a staggered release with overseas launches starting as early as June 7th, leading up to the domestic opening on June 22nd, so there will be a lot of info out there before the domestic release. The early reactions to the film have so far largely been positive and the trailers indicate that director J.A. Bayona is bringing something different to this franchise and making it scary again. Plus, the promise that Fallen Kingdom will have more dinosaurs in it than every other Jurassic film combined is a surefire way to pique the interest of people who like dinosaurs (i.e.: everybody).
