The Female-Led Fast And Furious Spinoff Is Really Happening
The Fast and Furious franchise has become one of the biggest in Hollywood history as the most recent installments especially have been massive global hits. It surprised literally nobody when it was announced that the series was planning to go to ten main installments, or when the franchise's first spinoff, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, was announced. Now, Vin Diesel himself has confirmed that yet another spinoff is moving forward. He took to Instagram to reveal that a host of writers have been brought on to pen a script for a female led Fast and Furious movie. According to Diesel...
As you know, there are three new spin offs that We have promised Universal... well this week we heard a pitch for the Fast female protagonist driven spinoff I created in 2017, and you can tell by the smile on Samanthas face it was VERY exciting. Shout out to Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Welcome to the Fast FAMILY
Vin Diesel says he originally put forth the idea of female driven Fast and Furious movie but that now a story around that concept has been pitched to Diesel and the other producers on the franchise. Diesel published the news to Instagram along with a picture of himself and his sister, Samantha Vincent. As stated, she has a smile on her face. He's looking serious as usual.
To write the script for the female-led film, three female writers with some serious cred have been brought on board. Nicole Perlman was a writer on the first Guardians of the Galaxy and she also helped pen the story for the upcoming Captain Marvel. While Lindsey Beer only has one completed film to her credit, 2018's Sierra Burgess is a Loser, she has several high profile projects that she is attached to, including the film adaptation of Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicles and the recently announced reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Geneva Robertson-Dworet is one of the credited screenplay writers for Captain Marvel and she also helped pen the recent Tomb Raider movie.
Interestingly, this isn't the only car-focused movie that these three women are involved in as all three are currently attached to the adaptation of 80s cartoon show M.A.S.K: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand.
No details beyond the screenwriters were revealed, so exactly who will star in this film or how it will connect to the main franchise is unclear. One certainly assumes that the current women of the franchise will all be involved. Michelle Rodriguez had previously made it known that she wanted women to take a bigger role in the film series so it certainly would make sense for her to be not somly on board, but in a key role. Jordana Brewster had previously stated that her character of Mia Toretto would be back in Fast and Furious 9, so it seems like there's a good chance she could be involved here as well.
Right now somebody is really wishing they hadn't killed off Gal Gadot.
Clearly this one is still in the very early stages so a lot of things could change, but the public announcement certainly makes it clear that this new spinoff is a priority. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news on this new addition to the Fast and Furious film family.
